Mukesh Ambani’s message for Jio rivals; his views on Aadhaar, digital payments

NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries' telecom arm Jio controlled by the country's richest man  Mukesh Ambani  has always been a matter of concern for its rivals in the sector. From a range of discounts to the launch of "effectively free" entry-level 4G handset, Jio has always surprised the incumbent players by its actions. After a long run in the dark, the telecom stocks last week breathed a sigh of relief when the newest entrant announced a hike in mobile data tarriffs. Launched in September last year, Jio has said that it will turn profitable "shortly". In a recent speech at an award function, Ambani lauded the government's initiative towards digital payments and signalled a soft stance for its rivals in the market. He said, "The prime minister's vision is backed up by the concrete action in terms of open, transparent and fair policies where even some ragging by incumbents is tolerable and fun and we can still be friends." Ambani also pra

Samsung takes aim at Apple’s Genius Bar with experimental service centers

Samsung  might have significant mindshare in the US, but the company’s retail presence is pitiful at best with its locations within Best Buy stores. That could change in the foreseeable future, thanks to Samsung’s partnership with WeWork that sees the Korean manufacturer opening three pilot service centers across the US. Located in Detroit, Miami, and Williamsburg, New York, these “care centers” can give folks technical expertise on how to use their phones and mail away their devices to get fixed if the situation calls for it. While people wait, they can take full advantage of Samsung’s partnership with WeWork by using the space around them to get some work done. In other words, if folks want to use a conference room and make phone calls while waiting to get back their   Galaxy S8 , they are more than welcome to do so, according to Samsung Vice President of design Mick McConnell: The concept was, if I take time out of my day, at least I can sit in a conference

Google Assistant no longer plays downloaded music in Google Play Music

Google has been making some big changes to Google Assistant, such as moving the service to an app that can be  downloaded from the Google Play Store  and making it  available on Android TV . However, it seems as though some functionality is being removed if reports from redditors are true. These  reports  suggest that users were able to use Google Assistant to play music from their own library that was uploaded to Google Play Music, but a recent change now offers to play a streaming mix based on search criteria. Even setting Play Music set to return Downloaded Only music seems to have no effect. The problem appears to stem from Google Assistant, not Play Music, as it never requests Play Music to play anything other than streaming content. Play Music, for its part does a good job and while it will queue what GA requests, will not download/stream anything new. Several people replied in the comments affirming what the original poster cited, saying that they’re no longer able t

How to convert Windows installations to virtual machine images

There are quite a few use cases for wanting to convert a Windows installation to a virtual machine image; maybe you want to run tests on the virtual image afterwards, for instance to run an update to see how it goes. Or, you want to use the image as an option to access data from an old machine that you won't use anymore after the conversion. Most virtualization products support the conversion of live Windows installations to virtual machine images. Some come with the required tools so that you only need to run them, others are available as third-party programs that you need to run and use instead. This guide offers instructions on converting Windows installations to Microsoft Hyper-V, VirtualBox and VMware virtual images. VHDX Format -- Microsoft Hyper-V The conversion of a live Windows system to a Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machine image is very easy thanks to Sysinternals excellent  Disk2vhd program  for Windows. The program is portable, and you can run it from any l

New image of HTC’s first Android One phone leaks

HTC is next to join Android One. The Taiwanese company’s first phone for the program isn’t official just yet, but it’s been surfacing in multiple leaks over the last two months. It’ll be the U11 Life, known internally as the Ocean Life, that puts  HTC’s name on a mid-range device  with software managed by Google. A new leak from Roland Quandt reveals the U11 Life’s design from nearly every angle. He’s obtained a single image that shows the front, back, and side of the phone. And, as the name suggests, HTC’s U11 Life will look similar to the U11. Here’s the leaked image: Shown in the image above is allegedly the U11 Life in Brilliant Black. While HTC’s design language is clearly present, you’re not going to find its software overlay. HTC Sense is missing because all Android One phones run stock Android. HTC’s logo is stamped on the back, and the Android One logo is also there. The U11 Life won’t be unlike other Android One phones internally. Its specifications are expec
