The issues affecting WhatsApp earlier today appear to have been resolved.
On DownDetector the number of reported issues with WhatsApp have fallen from thousands to around a hundred in the UK.
Issues across Europe, Asia, Australia and across the world are also seemingly resolved, with just a handful of users still experiencing connection issues.
UPDATE FIVE
Connection issues are purportedly resolved in the UK, with users reporting being able to send and receive messages again.
However, in the USA thousands of customers are still reporting problems accessing the messaging service.

Some users are reporting on being able to connect again to the Facebook-owned app again but others are still claiming to have connection issues.
More reports suggest that the outage has spread across other parts of Europe and Asia.

Latest from Whatapp, the US company is aware of the issue and working to remedy the problem. It is not yet known how long the outage may take to resolve.

Reports of problems connecting to the app are continuing to rise in the UK and across the globe.
Over 3,000 Brits have reported issues with the messaging app and thousands more across the glove are also struggling to connect.
Users are currently struggling to connect and are unable to send or receive any messages. Some users are citing a global hack as a potential cause of the outage although Whatsapp is yet to comment.

Users are experiencing problems with the app across the world with reports coming in from Italy, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Germany, India, USA an Sri Lanka.
Express.co.uk contacted WhatsApp about the current outage.

WhatsApp is down for over a thousand of users in Britain right now, with reports increasing by the second that the app is broken.
Independent website DownDetector, which tracks social comments around a certain topic to monitor outages across the globe, shows over a thousand of WhatsApp customers reporting issues using the app.
According to the site, problems with the chat app occurred around 8am this morning, with hundreds of people reporting issues with the app.
DownDetector says that 51 per cent of customers are having issue connecting to it.
A further 29 per cent report issues receiving messages and 19 per cent are struggling to login.
WhatsApp users have taken to rival social networking site Twitter to report issues with the service today.
One user tweeted: “I’m such a cliche. Checking twitter to see if #whatsapp is down. It is.”
Another writes: “Whatsapp is down, whatsapp is down. This is not a drill. How can I demand constant attention from my friends now?!”

And one posted: “When Whatsapp isn't working and you have to text someone and not know if they've looked at the message or not.”
The Facebook-owned chat app outage has frustrated thousands of customers across the globe, who have taken to rival social media site Twitter to vent their frustration.
One said: “ Whatsapp down in Kenya for hours now. Users from parts of Europe, USA and Asia also experiencing delays in sending messages.”
Another moaned: “Can't get connection with WhatsApp yet again even though using home wifi about time you sorted the outage problems out.”
“Not impressed AT all. When a. communication platform for work is down for over an hour around 8 am is ridiculous,” said another.
This is not the first outage that WhatsApp has suffered this year.
The hugely-popular Facebook-owned chat app went offline for thousands of users back in May.
The outage lasted hours, with WhatsApp forced to issue a statement about the disruption to the service.
DOWN DETECTOR
Speaking at the time, a spokesperson for the company said: "Earlier today, WhatsApp users in all parts of the world were unable to access WhatsApp for a few hours.
"We have now fixed the issue and apologise for the inconvenience."
WhatsApp also suffered another worldwide outage earlier this month, with hundreds of users affected.
WhatsApp was bought by Facebook for an eye-watering $19 billion (£13 billion) in February 2014.
The cross-platform messenger now boasts more than 1.2 billion users.
WhatsApp has steadily added a number of new features over the last year, including support for GIFs and FaceTime-style video calls.
This is not the first worldwide outage that WhatsApp has suffered this year.

ANDROID
Update WhatsApp to the latest version available on Google Play.
Open your phone's Settings app > More > and turn Airplane mode on and off.
Open your phone's Settings app > Data usage > and make sure that Cellular data is turned on.
Open your phone's Settings app > Apps > WhatsApp > Data usage and make sure background data is not restricted.
Open your phone's Settings app > Wi-Fi and turn it off and back on.
Try connecting to different Wi-Fi hotspots.
Make sure Wi-Fi stays on during sleep mode.
Reboot your Wi-Fi Router.
Contact your mobile provider and make sure your APN settings are configured correctly.
Upgrade your Android OS to the latest version available for your device.
IPHONE
Confirm you are using the latest version of WhatsApp Messenger from the App Store.
Restart your iPhone:
Hold the On/Off button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the On/Off button to turn it back on.
In iPhone Settings, turn Airplane Mode ON then OFF.
In iPhone Settings > General > Reset tap Reset Network Settings (This will delete all your saved Wi-Fi passwords).
