BSNL Leads the Wired Internet Segment in India With a Market Share of 59.63% As of June 2017

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) recently released “Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report” for the Quarter ended June 2017. We’ve already covered the new related to telecom subscriber count, which you can read by heading over here. In the same report, the regulator also revealed the wired internet segment and the standings of ISPs in the country.

In wired internet segment, BSNL holds 59.63% market share with 12.92 million subscribers, followed by Bharti with 2.10 million subscribers. The total number of wired internet subscriber is 21.67 million at the end of June 2017.

Coming back to the wireless internet segment, Reliance Jio holds 30.12% market share with 123.36 million subscribers followed by Bharti Airtel with 92.23 million wireless internet subscribers at the end of June 2017.

The top five service areas in terms of internet subscriptions (wired+wireless) are Maharashtra (35.46 million), Tamil Nadu including Chennai (33.89 million), Andhra Pradesh (33.21 million), U.P East (29.54 million) and Karnataka (27.96 million).

In the broadband service space with a download speed more than 512 Kbps, Reliance Jio leads the way with a whopping 123.36 million customers, followed by Bharti Airtel and others. The total number of broadband subscribers increased from 276.52 million at the end of March 2017 to 300.84 million at the end of June 2017. Out of which wired broadband subscribers are 18.33 million and wireless broadband subscribers are 282.51 million.

Top five broadband (wired+wireless) service providers in terms of subscribers are Reliance Jio with 123.36 million subscribers, Bharti Airtel with 55.34 million customers, Vodafone India with 41.14 million subs, Idea Cellular with 26.37 million users, and BSNL with 21.76 million total customers.

In the wireless broadband segment, Reliance Jio holds 30.12% market share with 123.36 million subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with 13% market share with 53.25 million subscribers.

DTH Segment

In the DTH segment, a total number of 883 private satellite TV channels have been permitted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) for uplinking only/downlinking/uplinking, as of June 2017.

During the quarter ending June 2017, there were 293 pay channels as reported by 48 broadcasters as compared to 295 pay channels reported in the previous quarter. The total 293 pay channels include 210 SD pay TV channels and 83 HD Pay TV channels.

Trai says that Since its introduction in the year 2003, Indian DTH service has displayed a phenomenal growth. DTH has attained net pay active subscriber base of around 65.31 million. This is beside the viewership of the free DTH services of Doordarshan. As on QE June 2017, there are 6 pay DTH service providers in the country.
